Discovering Cape Coral's Hidden Waterways
Cape Coral, Florida is a boater's paradise unlike any other city in the world. With over 400 miles of navigable canals - more than any other city on the planet - Cape Coral offers an extraordinary playground for water enthusiasts. But the real magic begins when those canals lead you out to the Gulf of Mexico and the barrier islands beyond.
As Captain Randy of RBNB Charters, I've spent years exploring every corner of these waterways. From the quiet residential canals of Cape Coral to the open waters of Pine Island Sound, from the dolphin-filled passes to the pristine beaches of Sanibel and Captiva - this is my home, and I love sharing it with visitors and locals alike.
In this guide, I'll share the best spots, the hidden gems, and the insider knowledge that makes an RBNB charter different from any other Gulf Coast experience. Let's get out on the water!
The Best Spots for Dolphin Watching Near Cape Coral
Southwest Florida is home to one of the most dense populations of bottlenose dolphins in the world. These incredible animals live year-round in the waters around Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and the barrier islands. On almost every RBNB charter, we encounter dolphins - sometimes just a few, sometimes dozens.
The best dolphin watching spots are in the passes between the barrier islands and in the shallower grass flats where dolphins hunt for fish. Matlacha Pass, Pine Island Sound, and the waters around Sanibel Island are particularly productive. Early morning and late afternoon tend to be the most active times.
One of the most magical experiences is watching dolphins surf the wake of our boat. They'll swim alongside us for minutes at a time, leaping and playing just feet away. It never gets old, no matter how many times I've seen it.
Sunset Cruises from Cape Coral
Cape Coral sunsets are legendary for good reason. The flat, open horizon of the Gulf of Mexico provides an unobstructed view as the sun dips below the water in an explosion of orange, pink, and gold. Watching this from the deck of a private boat, BYOB drink in hand, is one of the most perfect experiences Southwest Florida has to offer.
The best sunset viewing spots are out in the open Gulf, away from the mainland. I like to position the boat just west of the barrier islands where we have a clear 180-degree view of the horizon. Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island make for beautiful silhouettes against the setting sun.
Sunset cruises are typically 2-3 hours and are perfect for couples, small groups, and anyone who wants a romantic, relaxing Gulf Coast experience. Pack your favorite BYOB drinks, bring a camera, and prepare to be amazed.
Shelling on Sanibel and Captiva
Sanibel Island is known worldwide as the Shelling Capital of the World, and for good reason. The island's unique east-west orientation causes shells to wash ashore in extraordinary quantities and variety. You'll find lightning whelks, junonia, horse conchs, alphabet cones, and hundreds of other species that are rare elsewhere but common on Sanibel's beaches.
The best shelling is in the early morning, before other beachgoers arrive and before the tide covers the shells. On an RBNB charter, we can time our arrival at Sanibel to coincide with the best shelling conditions. Captain Randy knows which beaches have the best shell concentrations at different times of year.
Captiva Island, just north of Sanibel, also offers excellent shelling with the added bonus of a more remote, less crowded atmosphere. Arriving by private boat means you can access beaches that are difficult to reach by land - your own private shelling paradise.
What to Bring on Your Cape Coral Charter
Preparing well for your RBNB charter will make the experience even more enjoyable. Here's my captain's checklist:
- Sunscreen: The Florida sun is intense, especially on the water. Apply reef-safe sunscreen before boarding and reapply every 2 hours.
- Sunglasses and hat: Protect your eyes and face from the sun's reflection off the water.
- Non-slip footwear: Boat decks can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip - flip flops are fine but closed-toe shoes are better.
- BYOB cooler: RBNB Charters is fully BYOB. Pack your favorite drinks and snacks in a cooler. We have space on board.
- Camera or phone: You'll want to capture the dolphins, sunsets, and shells. Waterproof cases are recommended.
- Light layers: Even in summer, the sea breeze can be cool at speed. A light jacket or cover-up is useful.
- Shell bag: If you're visiting Sanibel or Captiva, bring a mesh bag for collecting shells.
Most importantly, bring your sense of adventure and your smile. Southwest Florida's Gulf Coast is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and experiencing it by private boat with a local captain is something you'll remember for the rest of your life.
